Atopic Dermatitis
Atopic dermatitis, a disease that is commonly referred to as eczema, typically starts in early infancy and is usually genetic. It is characterised by pruritus (itchiness), xerosis (dry skin) and lichenification on the skin (thickening of the skin and increase in skin markings).
Common characteristics include a personal history of allergies and sensitivity to allergens, such as dust mites, pollen, animal dander and moulds. Also, food allergies and history of asthma or hay fever.
